UMW Men's Lacrosse Tops St. Mary's, 11-7, in Wednesday CAC Battle

Box Score

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 6-1 first quarter lead on the way to an 11-7 victory over St. Mary's College on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 6-7 overall, and 3-3 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

UMW started strong, as Drew Carlson scored on a Miles Davis assist just 27 seconds into the action. Two minutes, later, Noah Dewey scored on a Davis helper to raise the lead to 2-0, and Owen Dingman scored on a Mike Colgan assist with 9:23 left in the first to push the margin to 3-0.

Shane McKenzie provided UMW's fourth goal at 4:01 on a Chase Kapuscienski assist, before the Seahawks found the scoreboard to cut the margin to 4-1. Mike Marson returned the margin to four with 1:00 left, and Conor Healy scored on Davis' third assist of the period to give the Eagles a 6-1 lead with seven seconds remaining.

The Eagles started the second just as swiftly, as Carlson scored on a McKenzie assist with 5:23 left. The Seahawks scored in the final minute to move the score to 7-2 in favor of the Eagles at halftime.

In the third, UMW netted goals from Marson (on another Davis assist) with 14:10 remaining, and from Chris White on a Davis assist with 12:08 to go. St. Mary's answered with a pair of goals to trim to score to 9-4, but tallies from Marson and Dingman to open the fourth put the matter to rest.

The Seahawks scored three late tallies, but that was not enough to catch the hosts. UMW was led by Davis' five assists, Marson's three scores, and two goals each from Dingman and Carlson.

St. Mary's led in shots, 49-37, as well as ground balls, 52-48. Billy Senicola and Sam Wasson each had seven saves in goal for UMW, while Dingman collected six ground balls.

UMW will return to action next Wednesday when they visit Frostburg State University at 4:00 p.m.
