Freshman Christian Hague belted his second grand slam of the season to lift the University of Mary Washington baseball team to a 7-6 victory at Virginia Wesleyan College on Monday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 14-16 on the season.

The Eagles seized the lead early, plating two runs in the first. Brian Burns was hit by a pitch to lead off, and Thomas Weaver followed with a single. Stephen Johnston knocked in one run with a double, and Ramsis Ruiz added another RBI with a single.

The Marlins scored one in the first and three in the third to take a 4-1 lead, but the Eagles countered with five in the fourth to take the lead for good. Garrett Lyons reached on an error and moved to third on a Zavier Webb single. Bryce Runey followed with a walk, and on the pitch Lyons scored on a wild pitch.

After Weaver reached on an infield single to load the bases, Hague hit the second grand slam of his season, putting the Eagles ahead, 7-4. The Eagle relief corps took over with sophomore Alex Shapiro, who gained the win in relief, pitched four innings of one-hit relief, followed by a two strikeout effort from Bryant White in a spotless eighth.

Johnston allowed a pair of runs in the ninth but gained the final out to record the save.

Weaver, Johnston, Ruiz, and Webb each had two hits for the Eagles, with Hague adding the grand slam.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit Southern Virginia University in a Capital Athletic Conference showdown at 3:00 p.m.
