Strong Start Propels UMW Men's Lacrosse Past Southern Va., 14-10, on Saturday in Road CAC Tilt

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 5-1 first quarter advantage en route to a 14-10 victory at Southern Virginia University on Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action in Buena Vista, Va. The Eagles improve to 5-7 overall, and 2-3 in CAC play.

The Eagles jumped on top with a score from Mike Marson on an Owen Dingman assist with 13:29 remaining in the first. Eli Ayer followed that score by gaining the faceoff and scoring seven seconds later to build a 2-0 lead. Marson scored again with 9:48 left in the first, and, after a SVU score, Dingman upped the lead to 4-1 with a goal with 3:22 left. Marson scored on a man up opportunity with 1:14 left to cap the quarter scoring.

Southern Virginia closed the gap in the second, scoring three of the four goals. UMW's tally came courtesy of Marson, who scored with 9:47 left before halftime. UMW held a 6-4 advantage at intermission.

The Eagles seozed control with four straight scores to open the third. Marson scored with 12:34 left, and again at 10:41 on a Miles Davis assist. Shane McKenzie scored with 9:51 remaining, and Conor Healy added a score with 8:19 left. After a Knights goal, Chris White scored on a McKenzie assist with 3:03 left. The Knights scored the last two of the frame to trim the deficit to 11-7.

The teams traded goals to start the fourth, with Vince Smiroldo scoring for the Eagles on a Davis pass. After the Knights scored two to cut the margin to 12-10, UMW scored the final two goals, with Jack Carver scoring twice, one on a pass from Marson.

The Eagles held a 44-41 shot advantage, and a 32-31 edge in ground balls. Billy Senicola had 10 saves in goal for UMW, who will be back in action on Wednesday when they host St. Mary's College in another key CAC showdown.
