After spotting homestanding Washington & Lee University three first quarter goals, the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team defeated the Generals, 16-13, on Wednesday night in Lexington. The Eagles improve to 3-3 on the season.

The Generals scored three times in the first 5:08, but the Eagles regrouped. Sophomore Shane McKenzie scored on a Chase Kapuscienski assist with 5:47 remaining in the first, and Jack Carver scored unassisted with 4:48 to go to cut the deficit to 3-2.

In the second, the Eagles continued to thrive, scoring four more in a row to open the frame. Mike Marson scored on a Miles Davis assist with 14:20 left, and Davis scored unassisted 1:03 later. Kapuscienski scored with 10:43 remaining, and J.C. Reynolds scored on a Marson assist with 9:44 left to buld a 6-3 Eagle lead.

After a Generals goal, McKenzie scored again with 4:32 remaining. But W&L ended the second with the final score, giving the Eagles a 7-5 lead at halftime.

In the third, W&L scored to open play, but the Eagles answered with scores from McKenzie and Owen Dingman to build the lead to 9-6 with 9:25 left in the third. Two General scores cut the margin to 9-8, but Drew Carlson scored with 1:10 left to move the lead back to two. W&L scored late to cut the deficit to 10-9 entering the fourth quarter.

UMW scored three straight to open the fourth, with tallies from Robert Tata, McKenzie, and Carver. With a 13-9 lead, UMW saw the Generals come back with a pair of goals, but then answered with two themselves, from Vince Smiroldo and Marson. W&L was able to cut the margin to 15-13, but Carver scored on a Davis assist in the final minute to cap the scoring.

McKenzie scored four goals and one assist for UMW, while Carver scored three times, and Marson added two goals and two assists. Sam Wasson and Billy Senicola each had three saves in 30 minutes in splitting time in goals for the Eagles. Eli Ayer had 13 ground balls.

UMW will be back in action on Saturday when the men host Catholic University at 1:00 p.m.
