UMW Baseball Splits Doubleheader vs. Messiah

The University of Mary Washington baseball team split a doubleheader with Messiah on Saturday at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles took the opener, 5-4, while Messiah won the night cap, 3-2.

The Eagles won game one in dramatic fashion, overcoming a 4-0 deficit in the sixth inning. The Falcons scored four runs in the fifth after the game started scoreless for four innings. After being held without a hit for five frames, UMW started the comeback with two in the sixth.

Mark Smith started by reaching on a wild pitch on a strikeout. Garrett Lyons broke up the no hit bid with a single, sending Smith to third. Lyons stole second, and both runners advanced on a passed ball. Thomas Weaver followed with an RBI single to trim the Falcon lead to 4-2.

In the seventh, pinch hitter David Slupek doubled with two outs, and pinch runner Cody Beacorn scored on a triple to center field from Smith. Riley West followed with an RBI single to tie the score.

UMW gained the win in the eighth, as Weaver led off with a single, and Brian Burns followed with another hit. After Stephen Johnston was walked to load the bases, Kyle Bynum hit a sacrifice fly to center to plate Weaver with the winning run.

Burns led UMW with two hits, while Smith scored a pair of runs. Bryant White gained the win in relief for UMW, allowing one hit in 3.2 innings with no walks and seven strikeouts.​

In the second game, Messiah took an early 2-0 lead in the first, but the Eagles responded and tied the game in the second inning.

Bynum started off with a single, then Christian Hague doubled to send him to third. After Hague advanced to third on a passed ball, Tyler Truslow drove him in on a single. Robert Cross followed with a single to move Truslow to third. Lyons then singled to center field to bring in Truslow.

Messiah scored again in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead, which proved to be the last run of the game.

Bynum and Johnston each had two hits for the Eagles, while Lyons and Truslow drove in both runs for the Eagles. Nick McIntyre took the loss for the Eagles, allowing three runs in 5.1 innings with two walks and nine strikeouts.

The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday as they host St. Mary's at 3:00 pm to open up Capital Athletic Conference play.
