UMW Baseball Splits Saturday Twinbill at Marymount

The University of Mary Washington baseball team split a doubleheader with Capital Athletic Conference rival Marymount University on Saturday. Game scored were 3-2 and 9-6. The Eagles move to 11-10 on the season and 4-5 in CAC play.

In the opener, the Eagles took an early 1-0 lead in the first. Brian Burns started things off with a double to center field before Reed Farrier hit a sacrifice fly to move Burns to third. Stephen Johnston then singled up the middle to drive in Burns.

In the third inning, Bryce Runey started off the inning with a single up the middle. Burns followed with a single before Farrier reached on a fielder's choice. Johnston hit a sacrifice fly to advance Burns to third. Kyle Bynum then doubled down the left field line to score Burns to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

Burns added to the Eagles lead in the fifth with a solo home run to left field. Marymount scored one in the sixth and ninth, but the Eagles held on for a 3-2 victory.

Nick McIntyre earned the win for the Eagles, while going the distance and giving up only three hits, striking out seven, and walking none.

In the nightcap, Marymount jumped to a 4-0 lead, scoring one in the second and third and two in the fifth. The Eagles responded with two runs in the sixth to cut the deficit to 4-2 when Thomas Weaver drilled a single to left field, scoring Johnston and Farrier.

Marymount added five more runs in the sixth to go up 9-2. In the seventh, Farrier and Johnston each tallied an RBI to cut the lead to 9-4.

Hague put another run on the board for the Eagles in the eighth after he drove in Robert Cross off a single down the left field line. David Slupek drove in Hague later in the inning to cap the scoring for both teams.

Hank Biggs took the loss for the Eagles, striking out five and walking one in 5.0 IP.

The Eagles are back in action on Tuesday at 3:00 pm when they travel to the Apprentice School.
