UMW Men's Lacrosse Falls to #18 Ursinus, 13-9, on Saturday at Battleground

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team jumped out to an early advantage, but 18th ranked Ursinus College came from behind to top the Eagles, 13-9, on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground in a game delayed at the start by lightning. The Eagles slip to 1-3 on the year.

The Eagles jumped on top with a score from senior Mike Marson with 12:08 remaining in the first on an assist from Vince Smiroldo. Drew Carlson upped the Eagle lead to 2-0 at 8:57 on a Marson assist, and Marson added another quickly (37 seconds later) to give UMW a 3-0 advantage after the first 15 minutes.

UMW added another to start the second quarter, as Miles Davis scored unassisted at 11:53. The Ursinus offense awakened with 6:59 left in the second to get on the board, and the Bears scored four goals in the final 4:14 to take a 5-4 lead to halftime.

The third quarter saw Ursinus extend its lead, netting the first two goals before UMW answered back to cut the deficit to 7-5 on a Marson goal assisted by Eli Ayer at 5:24 left. The Bears answered with three straight to end the third quarter, and led, 10-5, entering the fourth quarter.

Ayer opened the fourth with an unassisted score in the opening seconds to cut the deficit to 10-6, and after a pair of Ursinus goals, freshman Kaleb Hunter scored unassisted with 9:49 left.

Ursinus scored again with 9:10 left, but UMW's Shane McKenzie scored on a Robert tata pass with 8:48 to go to cut the margin to 13-8. Davis scored unassisted in the finale minute for UMW.

Marson led the Eagles with three goals and one assist, while Ayer added a goal and an assist. Bobby McClure had four goals and one assist for Ursinus.

The Eagles led in shots, 41-32, and won 12 of 23 faceoffs. UMW led in ground balls, 51-38. Sam Wasson had seven saves in goal for Mary Washington, while Nick Kirk had 14 stops for Ursinus.

Mary Washington will be back in action on March 4 when they host Widener University at 1:00 p.m.
