UMW Women's Lacrosse Tops Shenandoah, 15-5, on Wednesday

Sophomore Mackenzie Maguire scored four goals and added one assist and senior Kate Smucker added three goals and an assist as the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team defeated Shenandoah University, 15-5, on Wednesday in Winchester, Va. The Eagles improve to 2-1 on the season.

The Eagles gained control quickly and never let up, running out to a 10-0 halftime lead. McGuire started the attack with a goal assisted by Kirsten Littlefield at 25:40 remaining. Smucker followed with her first goal of the day just over a minute later, and Maguire scored on a Smucker feed a minute after that.

Allison Davis ran the lead to 4-0 with 17:54 left, and Kelsey Vincent scored on an Emily Mott assist with 16:27 remaining. Smucker scored on a Maguire assist with 15:37 to go before halftime, and Maguire scored unassisted with 11:54 on the clock.

Mott scored on a Holly Hudson assist less than a minute later to run the lead to 8-0, and Hudson found the nets with 4:39 remaining. Katherine Lambert capped the first half scoring with 2:04 left.

Smucker opened the second half scoring with 28:51 left, before the Hornets answered with a pair of goals to cut the deficit to 11-2. Sabrina Elliott scored on a Davis pass with 14:20 on the clock, but SU cut into the deficit with three straight goals over the next four minutes.

Hudson scored with 2:23 left, and Maguire scored on an Elliott assist 16 seconds later. Vincent scored on a Hope Lockwood assist to cap the scoring for the day.

The Eagles led in shots, 26-13, as well as in draw controls, 18-4. Jacquelyn Albanese had a pair of saves and Kelsey Welsh had four saves in splitting the minutes in goal for UMW. Paige Childers had four ground balls for the Eagles.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Saturday when they host Lynchburg College at noon for Win 4 Wesley Day.
