Hudson's Five Scores Lift #16 UMW Women's Lacrosse to 12-8 Win Over Denison in NCAA Tourney Second Round

Sophomore Holly Hudson scored five goals, including one early in each half, to lead the 16th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 12-8 victory over Denison University in the NCAA Division III Tournament Second Round on Sunday in Fredericksburg. The Eagles improve to 15-4 on the year, while Denison falls to 13-6.

Hudson helped the Eagles get out to a 4-0 lead, scoring the game's first goal with 28:34 remaining on a free position attempt. Junior Sabrina Elliott pushed the lead to 2-0 with an unassisted score with 16:14 left, and freshman Mackenzie Maguire added another with 13:42 to go in the first.

Elliott scored again with 12:16 left on a free position attempt to run the lead to 4-0, before Carol Allen got the Big Red on the scoreboard with 11:22 remaining. Junior Kelsey Vincent returned the Eagle lead to four with 10:11 left on a Maguire assist, and Maguire netted her second of the day with 4:07 to on a Paige Childers pass.

Denison cut the margin to 6-2 on a Claire Ludlow free position score with 3:26 to play, but junior Emily Mott capped the half with a goal with one second remaining, giving the Eagles a five-point cushion at intermission.

Hudson extended the UMW lead with a pair of goals in the opening 1:43 of the second half, but Denison answered with a run to get back in the game. Ludlow scored with 27:30 left, and Reid Hirschey followed with 21:41 to play to draw the deficit to 9-4, and Lizzie Pellicane and Claudia Rafi added scores over the next eight minutes to cut the margin to 9-7.

Once again, Hudson would help the Eagles find momentum, scoring with 15:33 to play, and Mott followed with a goal assisted by Maguire with 14:28 left. Hudson scored again with 2:12 to go, before Denison added another score by Allen with 33 seconds left.

The Eagles led in shots, 23-19, and in ground balls, 19-18. UMW won 12 of 21 draw controls, and freshman goalie Hanna Ashby made eight saves for the Eagles. Becca Jones and Hannah Magarian each had four saves splitting time in goal for Denison.

UMW will advance to the regional semifinals on Saturday to face Trinity (Conn.), who is 16-3 on the year, in action at a site and time yet to be announced by the NCAA.
