UMW Baseball Tops Southern Virginia, 7-3, on Wednesday Night for CAC Victory

The University of Mary Washington baseball team jumped out to four runs in the first inning en route to a 7-3 victory in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night in Covington, Va. The Eagles improve to 23-14 on the season, and 6-10 in league play.

The Eagles jumped ahead in the first, as Brian Burns doubled and Mitch Moynihan was hit by a pitch before James Keller hit a three-run homer to put UMW in front. Stephen Johnston and James Sink singled before David Slupek reached on an error to plate Johnston.

UMW added a run in the third, as Johnston hit a solo home run, but the Knights cut the deficit to 5-1 in the bottom of the inning with the help of a pair of Eagle errors. Ramsis Ruiz and Thomas Weaver singled to lead off the fourth, and Ruiz scored on a fielder's choice to up the lead to 6-1.

The Eagles scored a run in the sixth on a pair of errors to up the lead to 7-1, before three hits from the Knights produced a run in the seventh. SVU scored an unearned run in the ninth to cap the scoring.

The Eagles were led by Johnston's single, double, and home run, while Weaver also added three hits. Sink had two base hits for UMW.

Junior Erik Jorgensen allowed one unearned run in five innings on three hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in gaining the win. Junior Nick McIntyre allowed three hits in three innings of relief, and Ryan Van Assche pitched the ninth.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they host York College of Pa. for a noon doubleheader, with a potential CAC Tournament bid possibly on the line.
