#29 UMW Baseball Improves to 7-0 with Doubleheader Sweep of Messiah, 11-3 and 3-1

The 29th ranked University of Mary Washington baseball team swept a Saturday doubleheader from Messiah College, 11-3 and 3-1, to improve to 7-0 on the season.

In the opener, junior Nick McIntyre threw two-hit ball over six innings in gaining the win. The Eagles scored once in the first as James Keller doubled and scored on a James Sink RBI single, and another in the second as Jose Moreno singled and scored on a Thomas Weaver double.

Messiah tied the score with single runs in the third and fourth, but the Eagles regained the lead with singles from Brian Burns and Weaver and a groundout from Keller. UMW added two more in the fifth, as Burns tripled to plate Moreno and Cody Beacorn.

The Falcons scored once in the sixth, before the Eagles busted the game open with six in the sixth. Ramsis Ruiz drove home a run with a single before Stephen Johnston reached on an error that scored two runs. Weaver and Keller followed with RBI hits to push the score to 11-3, and Erik Jorgensen retired the Falcons in order in the seventh.

Weaver singled twice and doubled, driving in two, while Keller singled and doubled with a run scored and two RBI, and Burns singled, tripled, scored twice and drove in two. Sink had two hits for the Eagles as well.

In the nightcap, UMW scored twice in the third and once in the fourth to take a 3-0 advantage. Keller blasted a two-run homer to left to give UMW the lead in the third, and Johnston doubled and scored on a Weaver single in the fourth.

Messiah gained a run in the seventh, but Jorgensen pitched out of the jam in gaining his first save. Senior Tyler Daig gained the win, allowing three hits and no runs in five innings with three strikeouts and no walks. Jorgensen allowed two hits and a walk in two frames, striking out two.

The Eagles will return to action on Monday when they visit North Carolina Wesleyan College at 2:00 p.m. en route to Myrtle Beach for a series of games to follow.
