UMW Men's Lacrosse Opens with 7-5 Loss to Hampden-Sydney on Friday

Box Score

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team overcame a 4-1 deficit to tie the game, but fell, 7-5, on Friday afternoon to visiting Hampden-Sydney College on Friday afternoon at a chilly Battleground. The Eagles fall to 0-1 on the season.

The Eagles started the scoring for the day, as freshman Noah Dewey scored on an assist from sophomore Owen Dingman with 13:57 left in the first quarter. The Eagles still led, 1-0, after the opening 15 minutes.

In the second frame, Hampden-Sydney's offense came alive, as the Tigers outscored the Eagles, 4-0, to hold a 4-1 lead at intermission.

Mary Washington struck quickly in the third quarter, as freshman Shane McKenzie scored on a Dingman assist with 14:04 left. Dewey scored on a McKenzie assist with 9:33 left to trim the UMNW deficit to 4-3, and Jack Carver scored unassisted with 7:43 remaining to tie the score at 4-4.

The Tigers responded with a pair of scores to regain a 6-4 lead, but Miles Davis scored for UMW with 46 seconds left to cut the deficit back to one. A late Eagle goal was nullified after the Eagles were whistled for too many players on the field.

Hampden-Sydney scored the lone goal of the fourth quarter for the two-goal victory.

Hampden-Sydney led in shots, 28-20, faceoffs, 10-6, and ground balls, 41-32. UMW goalie Sam Wasson had 11 saves, while Hampden-Sydney's Mitch Renfrow had six stops.

The Eagles will be back in action next Wednesday when they visit Randolph-Macon College at 3:00 p.m.
