UMW Men's Soccer Improves to 7-1 for First Time Since 2006; Tops Roanoke, 3-0

Junior Guy Cross scored a pair of goals to lead the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Roanoke College on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 7-1 on the season, their best start since starting 7-1 back in 2006.

The Eagles opened the scoring at 31:42, as Christian Trout's free kick was headed by Riley Fisher to Cross, who finished to give the Eagles the lead. UMW held a 1-0 advantage at intermission.

In the second, junior Jacob Burke drew a penalty kick two minutes into play, and Cross converted to up the margin to 2-0. Freshman Robert Tata scored at 58:52 on an assist from classmate Ryan Van Maanen to cap the scoring.

The Eagles led in shots, 15-7, and in corner kicks, 4-0. Sophomore goalie Matt Spencer recorded the shutout for the Eagles, his sixth of the season, making three stops. Cole Sinclair had eight saves for the Maroons.

Mary Washington will return to action on Wednesday when they host Dickinson College at 5:00 p.m.
