Haught's Record-Breaking Grand Slam Lifts UMW Baseball to 9-4 Win Over St. Mary's

Senior Jono Haught hit his ninth home run of the season to break the UMW school season record, and lift the Eagles into the lead for the first time, in a 9-4 win over St. Mary's College for the University of Mary Washington baseball team on Wednesday at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 22-5 on the season, and 11-5 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

The Eagles fell behind, 2-0, in the second, but answered with a run in the bottom of the second, as Mitch Moynihan was hit by a pitch, stole second and advanced to third on an error before scoring on a James Sink sacrifice fly.

The Seahawks raised their lead to 3-1 in the third, setting the stage for Haught's heroics in the fifth. Right fielder Brian Burns reached on an error and Kyle Bynum followed with a single. James Keller walked to load the bases, and Justin Kime advanced each runner a base with an RBI single. Haught followed with a grand slam to right, breaking the school mark preiously held by Eric Guyton and John Chiles

Moynihan followed with a single, and scored on a David Slupek double. The Seahawks scored one in the sixth to cut the score to 7-4, but UMW plated two in the seventh. Moynihan led off with a triple, and scored on a Sink single. Sink stole second and advanced to third on a groundout before scoring on a wild pitch.

Kime, Moynihan, and Sink each had two hits for UMW, with Sink adding three RBI. Haught drove in four runs to raise his season total to 45.

Junior Ryan Van Assche gained the win in relief for UMW, allowing two hits in five inningswith three walks and seven strikeouts.

The Eagles will host Virginia Wesleyan College on Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
