Slupek's School-Record Three Home Runs Leads UMW Baseball Past Southern Virginia, 21-5, on Thursday

Freshman David Slupek hit a school record three home runs to lead the University of Mary Washington baseball team to a 21-5 win at Southern Virginia University on Thursday in Buena Vista, Va. James Keller and Brian Burns each had four hits for the Eagles, who improve to 17-5.

The Eagles scored once in the first, as Justin Kime singled, moved to second as Jono Haught was hit by a pitch, and both stole bases. Mitch Moynihan plated Kime with a groundout. Southern Va. took the lead with two runs in the second, but UMW scored five in the third to take the lead for good.

Kyle Bynum led off with a double, and scored on James Keller's RBI single. James Sink added an RBI single before Slupek hit a three-run homer, pushing the Eagle lead to 6-2. In the fourth, Burns led off with a single before Bynum hit his first home run of the year, and Sink added another RBI single to move the lead to 9-3.

UMW used six hits and a pair of errors to plate eight runs in the fifth. Thomas Weaver and Burns doubled, and Slupek hit his second homer of the day. Mitch Moynihan hit a two-run homer in the sixth, Haught drove in a run with a single in the seventh, and Slupek hit his record breaking third homer in the eighth.

Every Eagle starter scored at least one run. Keller and Burns each had four hits, while Sink, Slupek, and Bynum each had three hits. Kime and Haught each had two hits. Slupek led with six RBI.

Junior Bernie Mayflower gained the win in relief, going 4.2 innings, allowing one earned run on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

The Eagles improve to 17-5 on the year, and 8-5 in CAC play. UMW will visit Marymount University on Saturday for a noon doubleheader at the Washington Nationals Youth Academy.
