UMW Baseball Tops #12 Shenandoah, 10-2, to Improve to 8-0

Freshman 1B David Slupek had two triples, a single, and five RBI to lead the University of Mary Washington baseball team to a 10-2 win over 12th ranked Shenandoah University on Friday at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 8-0 on the season.

The Eagles opened with three runs in the first to take the early lead. With one out, Justin Kime doubled to left center, and scored on a single to right by Jono Haught. Mitch Moynihan reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on an error. Tyler Hoeflich followed with a single to put runners on the corners, and Slupek tripled to center to plate both runs.

UMW added a pair of runs in the third, as Haught and Moynihan singled, and Slupek tripled home both runners. After Shenandoah scored one in the fifth, UMW scored a pair, as Moynihan doubled and scored on a Thomas Weaver single, and Slupek scored after a single and an RBI single by Brian Burns.

The Eagles scored twice in the sixth, as Haught walked and scored on a double by James Keller. Moynihan later scored on a groundout by Slupek. Shenandoah scored once in the seventh, but UMW capped the scoring with a run in the eighth as Kime reached on an error and scored on a groundout.

Slupek tripled twice, singled, and was hit by a pitch, riving in five runs. Moynihan singled, doubled, and scored four runs for UMW, while Haught singled twice.

Gabe Tonga gained the win for the Eagles on a staff day, as five Eagles pitched. Tonga gave up two hits in four innings, with three walks and one strikeout.

The Eagles will host #4 Salisbury University on Sunday in a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader starting at noon.
