Smith's Late Score Lifts UMW Men's Lax to 14-13 Win at Hampden-Sydney in 2015 Season Lidlifter

Senior Greg Smith provided the game winning goal with 21 seconds left in the fourth quarter, as the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team opened the 2015 season with a 14-13 win at Hampden-Sydney College on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles erased an 11-10 deficit in the final 15 minutes.

The Eagles fell behind, 3-0, in the first quarter, but scored four straight to take a 4-3 lead. Sophomore Mike Marson opened the scoring with 3:15 left in the first, and the Eagles used that momentum to score the first three goals of the second.

Miles Davis scored with 12:22 left in the second, and sophomore Jack Carver scored 15 seconds later to cut the score to 3-2. Freshman Owen Dingman tied the score with 11:25 left, and after a Tiger goal, senior Jack Bondurant scored the first of his team-high five goals to give UMW a 5-4 lead.

After a pair of HSC scores gave them a 6-5 advantage, Smith scored to tie the score with 3:08 remaining, and Bondurant scored with 1:33 left in the half on a man-up opportunity to give UMW a 7-6 halftime lead.

The Eagles pushed their lead to three in the third, as Marson and Bondurant scored to push the lead to 9-6. The Tigers then reeled off four straight goals to assume the lead at 10-9. Bondurant scored with 1:32 left, but the Tigers scored in the final seconds to take an 11-10 lead into the fourth quarter.

Bondurant and Smith opened the final quarter with goals to give UMW a 12-11 lead, but Hampden-Sydney answered with a pair of goals to take a 13-12 lead with 6:57 left. Davis provided the tying score with 6:00 on the clock, and Smith found the game winner with 21 seconds left on a Chris Garcia assist to give the Eagles the win.

The Tigers led in shots, 40-28, and ground balls, 42-28. The Tigers won 15 of 28 faceoffs, and the Eagles went 2-7 on man-up opportunities, while HSC was 1-7. Junior Pete Shammas made 14 saves in goal for the Eagles.

Mary Washington will host Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday at 3:00 pm in the home opener.
