UMW Women Grab Second Place in CAC Standings with 71-66 Win Over Christopher Newport

Freshman Kendall Parker and sophomore Brianne Comden each scored 16 points to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 71-66 victory at Christopher Newport University on Wednesday night in Newport News, Va.

The Eagles jumped ahead at the start, scoring the game's first five points, including a three pointer from senior Claire Haeuptle. The Captains scored eight straight points, and held an 8-5 lead with 14:16 remaining in the first half. After three scoreless minutes, the Eagles cut the deficit to 8-7, but the Captains scoired 10 straight, and led, 19-9, with 10:04 left in the half.

Trailing 20-11 a minute later, UMW scored seven straight, including five from Parker, to cut the deficit to two, at 20-18, with 7:31 remaining. After the Captains pushed their lead to five, UMW cut the deficit to one, at 26-25 with 4:56 left.

Again, the Captains pushed ahead, using a 7-0 run to assume a 33-25 advantage with 3:09 left in the half. From there, it was all Eagles to close the frame, as UMW went on a 9-0 run to close the half, and take the lead to halftime at 34-33.

In the second, the Eagles held a slim lead for the first five minutes, before the Captains regained the lead at 41-40. CNU edged its lead to five, at 48-43, with 11:28 left, and to seven, at 54-47 with 8:58 to go. A 6-0 spurt by UMW with 6:21 left, capped by a Parker jumper, tied the score at 56-56.

The Captains regained the lead with a jumper, but Parker hit a go-ahead three for the Eagles with 5:04 left. The lead would change hands four times in the next two minutes, until a three-point play from Comden gave the Eagles the lead with 2:11 to play. The Captains tied the score at 66-66 with 36 seconds left, but Haeuptle hit another huge three pointer which provided the game winning basket with 24 seconds remaining.

The Eagles shot 41.7% (25-60), making 6-15 three pointers, and made 15-20 free throws. CNU shot 37.5% (21-56), making 7-23 three pointers, and 17-26 free throws. The Captains led in rebounding, 46-33, but the Eagles forced 22 Captain turnovers.

Parker shot 6-12 from the field, including 3-6 on three pointers, and added four rebounds. Comden went 6-10 from the field and 4-7 from the line, adding six rebounds.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. when they host York College of Pa., with members of the Eagles' CAC Silver Anniversary Team being recognized at halftime.
