#17 UMW Men's Lacrosse Falls 9-8 Against Cabrini in NCAA Tournament First Round; UMW Ends Historic Season at 14-4

Radnor, Pa.—The #17 University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team fell 9-8 in a closely contested NCAA Tournament First Round matchup with Cabrini. UMW got ahead early before Cabrini took a lead into halftime. UMW fought back late, but fell just short in the final minute. The Eagles end their historic year at 14-4. 

Joey Marson got the scoring started with a goal two minutes in from Chip Pittard. Senior Luke Dick got on the board just a minute later to make it 2-0 Eagles early. UMW jumped ahead 3-0 after the Marson brothers connected for a goal at the 9:52 mark. Mike Marson found the net off a feed from Joey. Dick got his second of the game to give UMW a 4-0 lead, forcing a Cabrini timeout. 

The Cavaliers then rattled off six straight, with goals from DiSanzo (3), Elmer, Sobieski, and Downey to close the half up 6-4. Cabrini led in shots, 20-17, after the first half. Luke Dick lead the Eagles in the opening half with two goals, while Joey Marson and Mike Marson each had one. Zack DelGrosso made eight saves in the opening 30 minutes. 

UMW came out early in the second half, getting a goal from Joey Marson to cut the Cabrini lead to 6-5. The Cavaliers found the answer minutes later on a DiSanzo goal. Luke Dick made it a one-goal game again on the next possession. However, the Cavaliers would answer again, to lead it 8-6 heading into the final stanza. 

Cabrini opened the fourth with a goal to lead it 9-6. UMW would fight back late. The Eagles rattled off two goals back to back from Luke Dick (3:14) and Chip Pittard (2:34) to cut the lead to one at 9-8 late. The Eagles had a chance late, but the shot sailed high, and Cabrini ran out the final minute of the game. 

The Eagles were lead by Dick, who scored four goals on the day. Joey Marson (2), Pittard, and Mike Marson provided the other tallies. DelGrosso had another stellar game between the pipes, recording 14 saves in the contest. The Eagles end the year at 14-4. 

NOTES: The Eagles end the 2014 season with the most wins in program history with 14. This was also the first NCAA Tournament appearance for the Eagles as well.
