Howland Scores 15, as Eagles Fall 64-43 to Christopher Newport

Fredericksburg, Va.—The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team fell to Christopher Newport, 64-43 on Wednesday in CAC action. Aubrey Howland led the Eagles with 15 points, while grabbing six rebounds in the loss. The loss moves the Eagles to 9-5, 3-4 CAC on the year.

Howland got the Eagles on the board with a jumper to tie the game at 2-2 early on. From there, CNU went on a 5-0 run to extend their lead to 7-2.

Mary Washington would answer back with a mini 4-0 run of their own, to cut the deficit to 9-6. Sam Partonen and Howland combined for two points each on the run. The Captains came storming back, to retake a seven point lead.

CNU would extend the lead to ten, forcing coach Applebury to use a timeout at 18-8. Freshman Brianne Comden cut the lead to eight at 22-14 midway through the half.

The Captains would take a 15 point lead into the locker rooms, at 30-15. Comden led the Eagles in the first half with six points and five rebounds. Howland added four points, along with three boards. The Eagles as a team shot only 25.9% from the field in the first half.

The beginning of the second half went back and forth, before CNU put together a 4-0 run to push their lead up to 51-29.

UMW answered right back with a 5-0 run of their own thanks in part to Howland, Amanda Witmer and Aby Diop. The run cut the deficit to 17, before the Captains took control and finished out the game winning 64-43.

Howland led the Eagles in scoring with 15 points, while adding six rebounds. Partonen added eight points and nine rebounds and two steals. Comden chipped in six points and eight boards. Although the Eagles outrebounded the Captains, 42-37, UMW only shot 30.6% from the field.

The Eagles return to action on Saturday, January 18th against Penn St.-Harrisburg. The game with the Lions tips off from the Anderson Center at 1:00 p.m.
