UMW Men's Lacrosse's Fourth Quarter Burst Tops Frostburg, 11-6, in CAC First Round

Box Score

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team broke open a tight contest by outscoring Frostburg State University, 4-0, in the fourth quarter to top the Bobcats, 11-6, on Wednesday in a rematch of the teams from a week ago. The Eagles improve to 9-6 on the season and advance to the CAC Semifinal on Saturday at Salisbury University.

Unlike in last week's Frostburg win in which the Bobcats ran out to a 7-1 lead, UMW jumped ahead in this meeting, as senior Sean Dacey put UMW ahead with 9:33 remaining. The Bobcats tied the score with 4:10 remaining, but Billy Kelly put the Eagles back out in front with 3:01 remaining, and scored again with nine seconds left in the quarter to put UMW up, 3-1, after one.

Johnny Esposito ran the lead to 4-1 with 11:42 in the second, but FSU scored a minute later to cut the deficit to 4-2. After the Bobcats cut the deficit to 4-3, John Bohlinger scored on a Joey Marson assist to give UMW a 5-3 lead. Kelly scored man-up on a Dacey feed with 21 seconds left to give the Eagles a 6-3 edge at intermission.

Charlie Webb gave the Eagles a quick score to open the third, just 14 seconds into the quarter. The Bobcats rallied for three straight goals to close the third to cut the deficit to 7-6 entering the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, the Eagles reeled off four scores while holding FSU scoreless. Paul Tunick scored with 11:52 remaining, and Josh Furnary scored on a Kelly assist with 5:28 left. Kelly scored on a Luke Dick assist with 4:05 left, and Marson capped the scoring with 1:31 remaining.

The Eagles blistered the Bobcats for 51 shots, while FSU had 37. The Eagles forced the Bobcats into 19 turnovers, and senior goalie Kyle Davitt made 16 saves. Davitt, Dick, and Travis Peed each had five ground balls for UMW.

The Eagles will visit top-seeded Salisbury University on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in the semifinal round of the tournament.
