UMW Baseball Sweeps Pair From Frostburg to Run Win Streak to Seven

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The University of Mary Washington baseball team swept today's conference doubleheader against Frostburg State University to extend its winning streak to seven games and remain undefeated in Capital Athletic Conference play. Jake Black picked up the win in both contests to improve to 5-1 on the season.

Today's games, originally scheduled to be played in Frostburg, Md., were moved to Dickinson Stadium because of lingering weather conditions on the campus of Frostburg State. The Eagles (14-7, 5-0 CAC) played as the visitors while the Bobcats (11-8, 1-4 CAC) acted as the home team.

Mary Washington took the first game 6-5. Mike Straub got the opening call and went 4 1/3 innings, giving up five runs on eight hits while striking out four Bobcats. The Eagles powered their way to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning when Seth Jordan singled and scored on a Jono Haught two-run bomb to right field.

With the game tied at 5 apiece in the top of the 7th, Brendan Jones singled to rightfield and scored on a leftfield double by Jordan. Black gained his fourth win of the season after pitching the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing only one hit and three walks and adding three strikeouts. Jordan went 4-for-4 with two RBI's and rounded the bases twice. Haught added three hits, three RBI's, and one run.

The Eagles won the nightcap 9-7 in dramatic fashion. Mary Washington trailed the Bobcats 7-6 in the top of the 7th before Kevin Yarnell hit a game-winning, two RBI single up the middle, scoring James Sink and Alex Bryant. Bernard Mayflower got the start on the mound, pitching four innings and giving up five runs on five hits and striking out one batter. Black got his second win of the day, giving up two runs on three hits with four K's.

The Eagles took an early 1-0 lead in the 2nd and followed up with a four-run 3rd inning. The Bobcats stormed back in the bottom of the 5th to regain the lead 7-5. In final inning, Bryant walked before Sink reached second base on a throwing error to first. Yarnell then drove in the two runs and stole second before coming home himself off a Jones centerfield double.

Joe Carlton came in to relieve Black in the final inning to gain the save. After giving up two hits, Carlton struckout three of the next four batters to seal the Eagles' victory. Conner Lilley paved the Eagles' offense in the second contest, going 3-for-4 with one RBI, including three singles.

Mary Washington will take the field tomorrow as the home team to complete the weekend series with Frostburg State. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Dickinson Stadium.
