UMW Baseball Sweeps Eastern Mennonite in Wednesday Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The University of Mary Washington baseball team received two more outstanding efforts on the mound and the bats came alive in game two as the Eagles swept a doubleheader from Eastern Mennonite University, 1-0 and 12-0, on Wednesday at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 3-1, and run their scoreless streak on the mound to 21 innings.

In the opener, neither team could score through six and a half innings. Senior lefty Torey Mancari turned in another terrific start, allowing just two hits in five innings, with two walks and seven strikeouts. Junior Chris Somerville allowed one hit in 1.1 innings, and junior Jake Black provided two-thirds of an inning of perfect relief in gaining the win.

In the seventh, the Eagles plated the game's only run, as designated hitter Connor Finnerty walked to lead off, and pinch runner Steven Barlow advanced to second on Alex Bryant's sacrifice bunt. After Kevin Stein was walked intentionally, both runners moved up a base on a groundout, and pinch hitter Chad Anglin provided the game-winner with a single to left to score Barlow.

Jono Haught led the Eagles at the plate with a single and double, as the Eagles had four hits in the game, one more than the three the Royals found.

In game two, the pitching remained impressive, as senior Mike Straub allowed just one hit in five innings, and Ben Sisk and Bernard Mayflower each provided a perfect inning of relief. Offensively, the Eagle bats came alive, scoring once in the first, twice in the second, once in the fourth, and eight times in the sixth.

Sophomore Brendan Jones led the way with three hits, two runs and three RBI, while sophomore Chris King singled and doubled with an RBI. Freshman catcher Tyler Truslow singled twice and scored a run and drove in another, while Haught doubled once more.

The Eagles are to play Randolph-Macon College on Sunday in a noon doubleheader at Dickinson Stadium.
