UMW Baseball Sweeps Frostburg; Gains Fourth Seed for CAC Tournament

The University of Mary Washington baseball team swept a Sunday doubleheader from Frostburg State University, 2-0 and 7-6, at Dickinson Stadium, to claim the fourth seed in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament this week. UMW improves to 21-12 overall and 9-9 in CAC play.

In the opener, the Eagles' first two hitters, Shane Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va., West Potomac) and Beattie Southerland (Purcellville, Va., Loudoun Valley), scored the only two runs of the game. Sixsmith singled, stole second, and advanced to third on an error. Southerland then stole second, with Sixsmith stealing home. Brent Steffey (Colonial Beach, Va., Colonial Beach) singled home Southerland with the second and final run of the game.

Michael Straub (Falls Church, Va., George Mason) gained the win for the Eagles, allowing five hits in six innings, with two walks and six strikeouts. Torey Mancari (Warrenton, Va., Paul VI) gained the save with two strikeouts in the seventh.

The second game saw the Eagles fall behind in the first, take a 4-1 lead, then see the Bobcats score five runs in the fourth to take a 6-4 lead. After cutting the deficit to 6-5 in the fifth, the Eagles rallied for two runs in the seventh for the come-from-behind win.

Eric Rehbein (Alexandria, Va., Gonzaga) led off with a hit by pitch, and advanced to second on a walk to Mitchell Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio, Notre Dame Latin). Senior Jackson Clement (Fairfax, Va., Woodson) followed with a double to right center, allowing Rehbein to tie the game, but Herringshaw was cut down at the plate. Clement advanced to third on the throw. After Jake Rudman and Connor Finnerty were intentionally walked, Santino Rosanova (Laurel, Md., DeMatha) provided the game-winning single to right field.

Mancari won the second game in relief, allowing one hit in one inning with one strikeout.

The Eagles will be the fourth seed in the CAC Tournament, and will visit third seeded St. Mary's College on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in first round action.
