UMW Men's Lacrosse Tops York, 19-9, in CAC Tourney First Round

Box Score The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team outscored York College in every quarter and avenged a regular season loss with a 19-9 victory in York on Sunday afternoon in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament first round. The Eagles improve to 8-8 on the season.

The Eagles scored the first two goals of the game, as James Fitzella (Vienna, Va., Madison) scored on a man-up opportunity on a pass from Mark Bowler (Cary, N.C., Cary) with 11:14 remaining in the first, and Bowler scored on a Dave Watts pass 16 seconds later. After a York score, the Eagles scored two of the next three tallies, with Dan Coats (Charlottesville, Va., Albemarle) and Brian Deal (Pittsburgh, Pa., Shady Side Academy) providing the points.

York opened the second quarter by cutting the deficit to 5-3, before the Eagles scored the final three goals of the second quarter to lead, 8-3, at halftime. Dan Coats, Harry Snyder (Charlottesville, Va., St. Anne's-Belfield), and Kohl Meyer (Shawnee, N.J., Shawnee) scored in the run.

The scoring opened up even more in the third quarter, as the teams combined for nine goals. York cut the margin to 8-6 before the Eagles scored three straight to regain a five-goal lead at 11-6. 

The fourth quarter saw the Eagles outscore the hosts, 7-2, for the 10-goal win. Meyer and Johnny Hink (Fairfax, Va., Woodson)each scored twice for UMW in the fourth.

The Eagles were led by Meyer's five goals and one assist, while Dan Coats added four goals. Deal, Hink, Brian Meaney, and Harry Snyder each scored twice.

Mary Washington outshot York, 43-38, and won 50 ground balls to 43 for the Spartans. The Eagles won 18 of 32 faceoffs. UMW goalie Matt Prin (Olney, Md., Sherwood) had 10 saves for the Eagles. 

The Eagles will visit Salisbury on Wednesday in the CAC Semifinals at 4:00 p.m.
