UMW Baseball Drops Saturday Twinbill vs. Stevenson

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GAME ONE  |  GAME TWO

The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped a pair of extra-inning one-run games to visiting Stevenson University on Saturday. The Eagles fell, 5-4, in nine innings in the first inning, and 6-5, in 10 innings, in the nightcap. The Eagles fall to 18-8 overall and 10-6 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

In the opener, Stevenson jumped ahead quickly, scoring twice in the first inning, and twice more in the third. UMW halved the deficit in the bottom of the third, as Seamus Bergen (Fredericksburg, Va., Chancellor) drove home Jackson Clement (Fairfax, Va., Woodson) with an RBI single, and scored on a Will Wright (St. Louis, Mo., St. Louis Priory) sacrifice fly.

UMW tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Eric Rehbein (Alexandria, Va., Gonzaga) singled and scored on Will Wright's double. Wright came home on a Santino Rosanova (Laurel, Md., DeMatha) sacrifice fly.

The Eagles loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth, but a line drive 5-2-3 double play and a groundout ended the threat. Stevenson scored in the ninth as a leadoff walk came around to score on a one-out single.

Bergen and Rehbein each had two hits for the Eagles. Freshman Nick Corbin (Staunton, Va., Buffalo Gap) took the loss, allowing two hits and one run in two innings.

In the second game, Stevenson scored three times in the first, but the Eagles answered with four in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead. Will Wright's two-run homer highlighted the frame. Stevenson answered with a tying run in the fifth, but Jackson Clement (Fairfax, Va., Woodson) hit a triple and scored on a Rehbein sacrifice fly.

Stevenson scored in the 10th inning on a hit and an error and a sacrifice fly. Freshman Matt Abramson (Malvern, Pa., Conestoga) allowed one earned run in five innings in taking the loss in relief.

Eight different players had hits for UMW, who committed three errors in the game.

Mary Washington will visit Salisbury University for another CAC doubleheader on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
