The University of Mary Washington was on the right side of first-year forward
Andrew Brittain's early score as the Eagles took down NC Wesleyan on Sunday at Roy Gordon Field in Fredericksburg, Va., 1-0, to advance to 3-0 this season.
After an early shot by
Michael Lenhard was saved by the Battling Bishop's goalkeeper, he was able to find Brittain in the 12' in front of the goal with just the keeper to beat. Brittain wound up with his right foot, shot the ball that went off the Wesleyan keeper's hand and dribbled into the back of the net to give UMW an early lead.
And it proved to be the difference as the Eagles would fire four more shots towards the goal for the rest of the day -- ending with six total and five on-goal. Meanwhile, NC Wesleyan had eight shots, though none of them were on-goal.
Zaine Asim and the backline recorded their third consecutive shutout to open the season. Brittan took three shots, Lenhard had two more, and
Braeden Kelly recorded another for the Eagles as they walked away with their third win of the week.
Mary Washington is back in action on Wednesday against Hampden-Sydney in Richmond, Va. at City Stadium. First touch is set for 7 p.m.
