The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team couldn't stop scoring in its 6-0 victory over NC Wesleyan on Wednesday afternoon in Rocky Mount, N.C. First year forward Maria Vera-Sanchez recorded her first career brace as
Taylor Garofalo,
Emily Box,
Emma Braxton, and
Carly Hax all scored for the Eagles.
The offensive onslaught began in the 29' when Garofalo netted her third goal of the season when
Gloria Abiassi found her open, but it was the only goal of the half for UMW as it took 19 shots in the first half, but the Battling Bishops came up with six saves. NC Wesleyan attempted just a pair of shots in the half, but neither were on goal.
In the second half, though, the Eagles couldn't be stopped. In the 70',
Katie Britton found Box to net UMW's second goal before
Becca Blunt found Vera-Sanchez in the 73' for Vera-Sanchez's first goal of the afternoon.
The fourth goal came just a minute later when
Katie Britton passed to Braxton, who added her second goal of her rookie season. Then another minute passed when Blunt found Vera-Sanchez again for the Eagles' fifth goal of the afternoon before Hax netted the final goal in the 79' to cap the offensive explosion.
In the second half, the Eagles continued to control possession as they took 14 shots, while NC Wesleyan had just one shot.
Keepers
Emily Orn and
Kaylee Norstrand and the backline recorded the Eagles' fifth shutout of the season. With the victory, UMW moves to 7-1-1 this season.
The Eagles are back in action on Friday against Marymount at Roy Gordon Field in Fredericksburg, Va. First touch is set for 4 p.m.
