The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team had little trouble in its 2-0 victory over Marymount on Friday evening at Roy Gordon Field in Fredericksburg, Va. The Eagles netted their goals on an own goal in the 57', then
Layla Royster finished her third goal of the season to ice the game in the 65'.
The Eagles and Saints went into the half tied as UMW controlled possession for most of the first half, out-shooting Marymount by three, 6-3. The Saints had a chance to take an early lead in the 4' and in the 15', but keeper
Emily Orn came up with a pair of diving stops to keep Marymount off the board.
But in the second half, Mary Washington dominated possession as it out-shot Marymount by 12, 16-4, forcing the Saints keeper to make five saves in the half. But the Eagles were able to sneak a pair of goals by for the win as Liv Ewing dribbled the ball from outside of the box to rip a cross that found the heel of a Marymount defender and rolled into the back of the net for the Eagles' first goal.
Just eight minutes later,
Gloria Abiassi was able to find Royster from just outside of the 18-yard box as Royster was breaking free from the Saints' defense and was able to dribble it past a pair of defenders and finish off the Eagles' second goal of the day.
Orn came up with four saves on the day as she and the Eagles' backline posted their sixth shutout of the season and moved to 8-1-1 this fall.
The Eagles are back in action on Tuesday in Lexington, Va. to take on No. 2 Washington & Lee. First touch is set for 7:00 p.m.
