The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team pulled through late with a victory as All-American forward
Maci Landel netted the game-winning goal in the late stages of Wednesday's match over Hood College, 2-1, in Fredericksburg, Va.
Landel's 89' breakaway goal became the difference in the UMW victory -- and added some drama late. But in the first half, it was all Mary Washington as the Eagles dominated possession with nine shots, compared to the Blazers' one. It was Landel who found
Maria Walsh open in the middle of the box as Walsh's right foot was able to beat the Hood keeper for UMW's first goal of the evening in the 14'.
From there, the Eagles took three more shots on the first half that were on net, but came up empty against the Blazers' keeper. In the second half, though, the Eagles were able to apply more pressure on Hood, but didn't have much to show for it on the scoreboard as they dominated possession with 18 second-half shots.
But Hood was able to squeeze a goal on a scrum in the box in the 76' that tied the game at one each before Landel's goal at the end sealed the game. With just over a minute to go, a Hood defender booted the ball to its offensive zone before
Naomi Knight sent it back the other way. The ball kicked off a Hood defender's foot, then off
Gloria Abiassi, who led Landel to the top of the box. And from there, it was all Landel, who netted the game-winner with just under a minute-and-a-half to play.
For the game, the Eagles dominated offensive possession with 27 shots -- 10 on-goal -- and held to Hood to just two shots. On corners, it was all Eagles as they led, 13-2.
Mary Washington advances to 5-1-1 this season and is back in action on Saturday at Stevenson. First touch is set for 1:00 p.m.
