The University of Mary Washington volleyball team overcame some early jitters to defeat St. Mary's College of MD, 3-0, on Tuesday night at Ron Rosner Arena. Set scores were 27-25, 25-21, 25-19; the Eagles improve to 4-3 on the season.
In the first, the Eagles fell behind, 7-3, and trailed 13-6 when an 8-0 run propelled them into the lead. Sophomore
Kathleen Harbaugh had a pair of kills in the run, while junior
Jocelyn Fang and senior
Natalie Brown each added one. The Eagles trailed, 18-15, but a pair of Brown kills and a pair of service aces from
Julia Gustafson put the Eagles back on top. The Seahawks rallied to take a 24-23 advantage, but the Eagles scored four of the final five points for the first set win.
In the second, play went back and forth, as did the lead, until the Eagles scored four straight to take a 22-18 lead. The Seahawks drew to within 23-21, but UMW tallied the last two points.
The third saw the Eagles extend an early lead to 12-6. St. Mary's rallied to pull to within 16-14, but UMW held off the Seahawks, and used a 4-0 run keyed by kills from Fang and
Sarah Starling to take control at 22-15, before closing out the set and match.
Fang led the Eagles with 12 kills, while
Sierra Hunt added eight.
Sofie Ferrell posted 22 assists, with
Naomi Decker adding 12, and Gustafson led with four aces and 17 digs.
The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday at Gettysburg College at 1:00 p.m.
