The No. 12 University of Mary Washington women's soccer team took down Randolph-Macon, picking up right where the Eagles left off in their Elite Eight run, 2-0, on Tuesday evening to open the season in Ashland, Va.
The Eagles got an early goal from
Maci Landel in the 24' after the senior forward led the team in goals a season ago. UMW controlled possession in the first half as it out-shot the Yellow Jackets, 6-2, before putting the game away in the second period.
It was
Katie Britton, who received a pass from Landel in the 54' that put the match away for the Eagles as the junior midfielder netted the third goal in her career. She tied the team-lead with three shots, while
Maria Walsh added three more shots.
Stephanie Reyes Chirinos and
Hailey Baltzelle added two more, while Landel,
Emma Braxton,
Gloria Abiassi,
Layla Royster,
Carly Hax and
Emily Box each had a shot.
Emily Orn recorded a pair of saves in net and posted a shutout as the Eagles out-shot the Yellow Jackets, 16-3, on Tuesday evening and put the pressure on the RMC keeper with six shots on goal.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday against Bridgewater for their home opener. First touch is set for 1 p.m.
