UMW Women's Soccer Draws With Batten on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team drew with Batten University on Saturday afternoon, 0-0, at Roy Gordon Field in Fredericksburg, Va. The Eagles certainly had a number of chances to score on Saturday, but excellent defensive play from the Marlins prevented that. In just the 3', Maci Landel took a free kick after a Marlin foul from just outside the box, but a great save from the Marlins' keeper held the game scoreless.

In th 42', Hailey Baltzelle wound up for a shot that also found the hands of the Batten keeper as the match went into halftime without a score. In the first half, both teams were tied in shots with four apiece as Emily Orn came up with the play of the afternoon in the 22' when she dove to her right to keep a shot from going into the back of the net. Orn also came up with a save in the 36'.

In the second half, though, UMW dominated possession with seven shots, compared to the Marlins' two. In the 87' Maci Landel had another chance to take the lead with a shot, but it landed in the hands of the Marlin keeper once more.

Emily Orn recorded three saves in net to post UMW's fourth shutout of the season. The Eagles led in shots on the day with 11, while Batten countered with six. Both squads had three shots on goal each, while Batten had a slim margin in corners, 3-2.

The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Hood College at the Turf Stadium in Fredericksburg, Va.
