The 21st ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team dropped its first contest of the season in a 2-1 defeat to visiting Gettysburg College on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 4-1 on the season.

Mary Washington controlled most of the run of play in the first quarter, and Gettysburg responded with a strong second quarter, but the game remained scoreless after 30 minutes.

In the third quarter, Gettysburg jumped in front with a score in traffic at 32:25, putting the Eagles behind for the first time all season. But the Eagles answered on a penalty corner at 41:07, as junior Hannah Jadgchew scored on a pass from sophomore Makenzie Tutone on the direct corner.

Gettysburg found the eventual game winner at 47:24 on a breakaway.

Mary Washington led in shots, 13-7, as well as penalty corners, 11-5. UMW goalkeeper Tori Winans made four saves, and junior defender Elizabeth Stribling added a defensive save for the Eagles.
