Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Bookend Goals, Staunch Defense Lift #21 UMW Field Hockey to 2-0 Win Over Batten

The 21st ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team scored goals in the first and fourth quarters, and the defense shined throughout in a 2-0 shutout victory over Batten University on Wednesday night at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 4-0 on the season.

After nearly 13 minutes of scoreless play that saw the Eagles find several chances, freshman Addison Beamer scored on a rebounded save from a Grayson Scott attempt 12:51 into play to give UMW the lead. The Eagles would fire off five more shots in the second quarter and another eight in the third, but Batten's keeper was equal to the task, as she stood out with 13 saves on the night.

Then, in the fourth, it was Scott scoring on a long directional pass into the cage from Hammah Jadgchew, redirecting the ball into the cage with 5:13 remaining. All throughout, UMW's defense was stellar, as the midfield and defense didn't allow a shot until the third quarter. Sophomore Erin Sutton added a defensive save.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, as they host Gettysburg College at noon. Prior to the game will be a press box dedication for long-time administrator Clint Often, starting at 11:30 a.m.
