The No. 12 University of Mary Washington women's soccer team scored once early, then its second goal late to break the tie in a 2-1 victory over Methodist on Saturday afternoon at Roy Gordon Field in Fredericksburg, Va.
The Eagles got off to a quick start when
Skye Lawhun was able to cross a quick pass to
Katie Britton in the box as the midfielder put her left foot on the ball and struck it into the back of the net for the game's first goal in the 7'.
UMW carried that 1-0 lead into the half as it took all nine shots between the team -- four of which were on goal. But a quick penalty just two minutes in the second half led to a Monarch penalty kick in the 47' -- which Methodist was able to convert to tie the game.
The Eagles, though, continued to dominate possession as they took 27 shots -- nine of which were on goal -- until McGee's right foot struck the ball in the 86' to break the tie and put UMW back in front, 2-1.
Mary Washington led in shots by a large margin -- controlling poessession throughout the game as UMW out-shot Methodist, 36-1. The Eagles had 13 shots-on-goal, while Methodist had just one.
The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday against St. Mary's (Md). in St. Mary's City, Md. First touch is set for 5 p.m.
