The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team used a mixture of youth and experience to take down Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday afternoon in the Eagles' 6-0 season-opening victory over the Royals at Roy Gordon Field in Fredericksburg, Va. First-year forward Ronan Quigley started his career off fast with a pair of goals late for Mary Washington.
The Eagles came out firing in the first seven minutes as senior midfielder
Jack Sturman used a
Micah Davis rebound to put the Eagles ahead at the 6:57 mark -- and from there, UMW never looked back.
The youth movement, though, began when first-year forward
Braeden Kelly netted the second UMW goal 20 minutes later before fellow first-year forward
Andrew Brittain scored the third goal of the first half for Mary Washington. Going into the half, the Eagles were out-shooting EMU, 11-1, and recorded five corners compared to the Royals' three.
In the second half, graduate student
Michael Lenhard scored off of a corner kick that bounced in front of the Royals' keeper to put the Eagles up by four goals. Then, Quigley added a pair of goals in the final four minutes as the first-year student received a pass from
Yahaya Abel before netting his first career goal. Then, just three minutes later,
Remi Abanda found Quigley for his second goal as the Eagles' capped off their big day in the 89'.
For the day, UMW led in shots, 20-5, and had another major advantage in shots-on-goal -- 12-2. Too, UMW led in corner kicks, 6-4.
Zaine Asim made his first career start in net as he and
Jimmy DiMaggio combined to shutout the Royals as Asim recorded a pair of saves.
The Eagles are back in action on Friday against Whitman College at 5 p.m. in Fredericksburg, Va.
