The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team used a strong second quarter run to defeat Meredith College, 14-12, on Wednesday evening at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 7-6 on the season.
The teams battled back and forth through the majority of the first quarter, with UMW taking the lead at 13:39 on a goal from
Abigail Fisher on an assist from
Maura Schroeder. After a Meredith score,
Anna Dube put UMW back in front at 4:54. Sophomore Ava WIndham added a pair of scores to put the Eagles up, 4-2, after 15 minutes.
UMW continued its 7-0 run to start the second, as Fisher scored on a Dube assist at 14:42, and
Sadie Laughlin followed with a pair of goals within a minute. Windham put UMW ahead, 8-2, and Dube added another, and the Eagles led, 9-2, with 9:29 left in the second frame.Â
Meredith chipped away with four straight goals of their own, but freshman
Seanna Ruimerman stopped the run at 11:28. Meredith drew to within 10-9, but Dube added one to end the third, and Schroeder scored a pair, followed by another from Fisher, to regain control.
The Eagles outshot the Avenging Angels, 31-21, and won 20 of 27 draw controls. Goalkeeper
Cece Van Blenis made seven saves in gaining the win.
Mary Washington will host Warren WIlson College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
