The 13th ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team dropped a close 4-3 decision to ninth ranked Johns Hopkins University on Wednesday afternoon at the UMW Indoor Tennis Center. The Eagles slip to 18-6 on the season.
UMW started by gaining the doubles point. Juniors
Asher Willenborg and
Trevor Rein scored a 6-3 win at number one, but Hopkins tied the score with a 6-3 win at three. The clinching win came from
Evan Fisher and
Jack Riordan at two, with a 7-6 (9) victory.
Hopkins quickly gained wins at five and six to take a 2-1 lead, but Riordan gained a 7-5, 6-4 win at three to tie the score. Willenborg then gained a 7-5, 6-2 win at one to give UMW a 3-2 edge, but the Eagles fell in three sets at two and four to fall in the team match.
The Eagles will be back in action on Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. against UC-Santa Cruz in the semifinal round of the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament at the Hegmann Family Courts.
