The University of Mary Washington baseball team (RV) hit three home runs -- junior
Connor Hassan smoked two of them -- in its 14-4 victory over Mary Baldwin on Wednesday in Staunton, Va.
The Eagles got off to a quick start in the first inning when
William Tuttle hit a bases-clearing double that scored
Eric Powell, Hassan, and
Collin Clarkson to open the game with a 3-0 lead. Then, in the third, Hassan hit a solo home run -- the first of his day to push the lead to 4-0.
With two runners on,
Collin Clarkson doubled home
George Rizzo to push the lead to 5-0 in the fourth before Hassan added three more runs on a homer that scored Clarkson and
Oliver Martin, 8-0. In the same inning,
Nicholas Chambers reached on a fielder's choice that scored Tuttle from third and to cap the inning off,
Cole Powers lifted a sac fly that scored
Sean Smith, 10-0.
Four runs in the bottom of the fourth allowed Mary Baldwin to claw back a bit, 10-4. But in the sixth,
Cole Powers' fielder's choice allowed Tuttle to score to add to the lead, 11-4. And finally in the seventh,
Eric Powell lifted a sac fly that scored Hassan before Tuttle scored on a fielding error from the third baseman, 13-4. And to cap off the day, Smith homered to right center to add another run to the total, 14-4.
Clarkson (4-for-5), Hassan (3-for-4), Smith (3-for-3) and Chambers (2-for-5) all recorded multi-hit games for the Eagles as
Jackson Myers tossed 3.1 innings out of the bullpen to collect the win.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday against Salisbury in Salisbury, Md. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
