The No. 25 University of Mary Washington (20-8, 2-0 C2C) baseball team picked up its fifth ranked victory of the season after downing No. 13 Christopher Newport, 5-2, in Newport News, Va. With the win, the Eagles move to 2-0 in Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference play.
To key the Eagles to victory, they were going to need a good start from
Gavin Riley, who had a tall task of silencing the Captains' bats. Riley, though, lived up to the challenge as he tossed a complete-game -- the first nine-inning complete game since
Brendan McComber did it in 2021.
On Saturday, UMW got out to a quick 3-0 lead as
George Rizzo and
Oliver Martin led the game off with singles before
Connor Hassan drew a one-out walk.
Eric Powell then followed with a one-out 3-RBI double down the left field line to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead before Riley had a chance to take the mound.
In the bottom of the first, the lefty yielded a run as the Captains were able to cut into the lead, 3-1, but they'd be silent until the eighth. From the second inning to the fourth, Riley set seven hitters down in a row before yielding a one-out walk. But it didn't affect him as he set down the next 13 batters from the fourth until an out was left in the eighth.
Mary Washington struck for a run in the sixth and seventh innings to add to the lead, 5-1. In the sixth,
Ryan Henson doubled home
William Tuttle to push the lead to 4-1, before Hassan's bunt single scored
Oliver Martin in the seventh.
And in the ninth, after the Captains added a run in the eighth, 5-2, CNU was set down rather quietly as Riley yielded a two-out walk before setting the final hitter down. In his nine innings of dominance, Riley yielded just two runs on six hits, two walks, one hit-by-pitch, while striking out four batters.
The Eagles are back in action on Sunday as they host Penn State-Harrisburg at 2 p.m.
