The 15th ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team split its matches with ninth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University and 17th ranked Gustavus Adolphus College on Friday at the UMW Invitational, falling 4-2 to the Tartans before topping Gustavus, 4-2. The Eagles move to 15-4 on the season.
The Eagles opened the event with its second showdown with Carnegie Mellon of the season. UMW dropped doubles decisions at two and three to yield the doubles point.
In singles play, junior
Jack Riordan scored a 6-3, 6-3 win at three, and freshman
Ryan Gipner gained a 6-3, 6-4 win at five.
The Eagles rebounded for a 4-2 win over Gustavus Adolphus, starting with the doubles point, as
Trevor Rein and
Asher Willenborg gained a 6-2 win at one, and
Ryan Battaglia and
Will Fromherz posting a 6-0 win at three.
Singles action saw Eagle wins from Willenborg at one (6-3, 6-3), Battaglia at five, 6-2, 7-5, and Gipner for the clincher at four, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
UMW will take on 22nd ranked Pomona Pitzer Colleges on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. for fifth place in the eight team event.
