The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team erupted for 21 goals from 15 different players, and the defense limited Nichols College to two scores in a 2-1 victory at the Battleground on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 2-4 on the season.
The Eagles started swiftly, with a pair of early goals from sophomore
Ava Windham. After Nichols scored with 9:07 left in the first, the Eagles closed the frame with three scores, from
Sadie Laughlin,
Abigail Fisher, and
Kimber Konen, and then outscored Nichols, 7-0, in the second.
Ella Santilli opened the second with her first of the day at 13:10, and was followed by
Sadie Laughlin at 11:53. Santilli added another at 8:19, and
Ashley Firesheets scored with 5:05 left to put the Eagles ahead, 9-1.
Seanna Ruimerman scored at 4:43, and Firesheets added a late pair to put UMW on top, 12-1, at halftime.
In the third,
Anna Currey netted a score at 13:30, and
Maura Schroeder scored at 11:14 before Nichols scored to halt the run. Schroeder and
Makenna Hadden added goals to close the third, and UMW outscored the Bison, 5-0, in the fourth, as
Molly Ryan Gates,
Olivia Griffin,
Daelyn Gregory,
Annabelle Buck, and
Allie Kennedy added their names to the score sheet.
The Eagles led in shots, 40-11.
Cece Van Blenis made a pair of saves in 30 minutes, and
Lila White added four in 30 minutes of relief.
Mary Washington will be back in action at home on Wednesday with a 5:00 game against Marietta College.
