The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team rolled out to a big lead, and defeated Marietta College, 19-2, on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 3-4 on the season.
The Eagles stormed ahead in the first quarter with eight goals. Sophomore
Sadie Laughlin opened the scoring on an
Ava Windham assist at 10:33, and senior
Kimber Konen added another at 8:31 on an
Abigail Fisher assist. WIndham followed with a pair of goals, at 8:07 and 5:51, the latter assisted by Fisher. Junior
Anna Dube followed with a score at 4:45 on a Fisher assist, and Laughlin, Windham, and
Molly Ryan Gates closed the quarter with unassisted goals.
In the second, freshman
Olivia Griffin scored a pair of goals, sandwiched by another from senior
Maura Schroeder, and freshman
Anna Currey added another at 8:21. Senior
Ashley Firesheets scored with 6:17 left, and UMW carried a 13-0 lead at halftime.
The Eagles started the third quarter with three straight, as
Ady Caton scored before a pair from sophomore Gracie Fugelberg. After Marietta scored midway through the third,
Summerlin Gates scored to give UMW a 17-1 lead entering the fourth. Caton and Laughlin added goals in the final 15.
UMW led in shots, 28-7. Eagle goalkeepers
Cece Van Blenis (0 saves),
Adrianna Hernandez (2) and
Lila White combined to gain the win.
The Eagles will host Haverford College on Saturday at noon.
