The University of Mary Washington's
Matthew Boyd carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning of Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader, which was followed by six shutout innings from left-hander
Jackson Myers in Game 2 in the Eagles' doubleheader sweep of Muskingum on Saturday afternoon.
Game 1 - Eagles win, 4-1
In Game 1, starting pitcher
Matthew Boyd carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning when a Muskies batter recorded a base-hit in a 2-1 count with an out in the inning. Before that, though, Boyd had set down the last 12 hitters he had faced going back until the second inning. He worked around a first inning walk and hit batter to hold the Muskies scoreless and a second hit batter in the second.
Then, he was dominant as he worked all the way into the eighth inning, departing with two outs left in the inning after yielding just one run on one hit, two walks and two hit batters. He struck out three, forcing nine fly outs and 10 ground outs.
Brodie Carley finished the eighth for Boyd before handing the ball off to
Jake Herbst for his first career save in the ninth.
On the scoreboard, UMW struck first with
Oliver Martin's RBI single, then a
Collin Clarkson RBI double that landed just inside the left field line. Up by a pair,
Ryan Henson singled home
Benjamin Rossi in the sixth to add to the lead, 3-0, before Clarkson singled another run home in the seventh.
Game 2 - Eagles win, 6-1
In Game 2, Myers was just as dominant as Boyd was on the bump. The southpaw yielded a lead-off single, but then set down 13 of the next 14 hitters he faced. Myers finished off six innings and struck out nine, yielding just two hits and one walk in his shutout effort.
Andrew Poon,
Nick Jordan (unearned run), and
Fisher Canaday finished off the final three innings for the Eagles.
On the scoreboard, the Eagles scored first when Rossi reached on an infield single, drawing an errant throw from the Muskies shortstop after a diving stop that went past the first baseman that allowed for
William Tuttle to score. Then an
Eric Powell single drove in two more runs to add to the lead, 3-0.
In the fourth, Tuttle grounded out to the shortstop, a ground ball that was deep enough to score
Sean Smith from third. And later in the inning Martin singled home
Ryan Henson to increase the lead to 5-0. And finally, Henson singled home another run in the sixth to give the Eagles a 6-0 lead.
The Eagles are back in action on Sunday to wrap up their weekend series with Muskingum at Noon.
