UMW Baseball Comes Back to Win Thriller Over Muskingum, 7-5

The University of Mary Washington baseball team won a back-and-forth thriller over Muskingum on Sunday, 7-5, to secure the series sweep and the Eagles' eighth consecutive victory in Fredericksburg, Va.

Mary Washington jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second that went like this: Eric Powell singled with one out beofre stealing second and then scoring on a Sean Smith RBI single that gave the Eagles the early advantage. A hitter later, Ryan Henson doubled to put a pair of runners in scoring position before George Rizzo singled home a pair of runs to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.

A Muskie RBI double in the third, then a solo homer in the fifth brought Muskingum within a run at 3-2. In the sixth, the Muskies added a pair of runs to take the lead at 4-3 before adding another run on an errant pick-off attempt in the top of the eighth.

But in the bottom half of the inning, the Eagles struck back for the final time. With an out, Collin Clarkson doubled to right center field before he was advanced to third on a ground out a batter later. With a runner of third and two outs, Benjamin Rossi was hit by a pitch in a full-count, and after an 11-pitch battle, Powell drove an RBI double down the left field line to pull the Eagles to within one, 5-4.

With a pair of runners in scoring positions and after an 11-pitch battle, Smith delivered the game-tying and go-ahead knock as he drove in a pair with a single that snuck past the Muskies' second baseman to give UMW the lead, 6-5. A hitter later, Henson doubled home Smith to give UMW an insurance run, 7-5.

After Michael Liu, who worked the eighth, surrendered a walk with an out in the ninth, Connor Hassan was called on to finish off the game as the tying run stepped up to the plate. He did just that as he struck the final two hitters out to give UMW its weekend sweep.

The Eagles are back in action on Monday with a doubleheader against Hampden-Sydney. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
