UMW Softball Splits Wednesday Doubleheader with NC Wesleyan

The University of Mary Washington softball team split a Wednesday doubleheader with NC Wesleyan as its fell in the first game before taking a thrilling Game 2 in Rocky Mount, NC.

Game 1 - Eagles fall, 4-2

In Game 1, the Eagles fell behind in the first before tying the game in the second on a throwing error from the Bishops' catcher allowed Shelby Presgrave to score. NC Wesleyan scored three more times before the seventh before UMW scored its final run of the game on an Emily Mousso ground out,

Stephanie Csontos was excellent in relief as she tossed four innings of one-run ball, yielding just three hits and striking out four. Emily Angel, Linsey Spillman, Presgrave and Mousso all recorded hits for UMW.

Game 2 - Eagles win, 6-5.

In Game 2, after getting two runners on, Mousso delivered an RBI double that put the Eagles on the board first, 1-0. Shoop added to the lead with an RBI single that scored Angel to add to the lead before Bayly Yerigan reached on an infield single that scored Mousso from third to give UMW a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

In the third, UMW added to its lead even more as Ari Briddle drew a bases-loaded walk as did Sydney Jester a batter later to add to the lead, 5-0. The Battling Bishops added two runs in the bottom of the third, but what became the game-winning run was singled home by Shoop in the fourth inning that scored Presgrave to give the Eagles a 6-2 lead.

NC Weslyean scored three runs in the fifth as that was as close as the Bishops would get as the Eagles stranded the game-tying and winning runs in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh.

The Eagles collected nine hits as Angel, Mousso, Shoop and Yerigan all collected a mutli-hit game. Anna Dobson went the first four innings, earning her second victory of the season before handing the ball off to Charlotte Daniels, who collected her first career save after pitching the final three innings.

The Eagles are back in action on Saturday in Raleigh, N.C. as they'll play NYU at 11:00 a.m., then follow with Averett at 1:30 p.m.
