UMW Baseball Upsets #5 Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, 9-6

The University of Mary Washington used timely knocks and solid bullpen work in its upset over No. 5 Johns Hopkins on Wednesday evening in Baltimore, Md., 9-6.

The Eagles' offense jumped on Blue Jays starter William Jaun in the first inning after Oliver Martin singled before moving to second on a ground ball, where he was eventually brought around by Connor Hassan's first RBI single of the day to give UMW a 1-0 lead. The Eagles added another run in the third after George Rizzo laid down a bunt single before coming around to score on an Oliver Martin sac fly.

The Blue Jays tied the game on a two-run homer in the bottom of the third. In the fifth, Martin homered for the second time in his career to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead. But in the bottom of the inning an RBI single and a dropped pop up gave the Blue Jays their first lead of the day, 4-3.

But in the final innings, it was all UMW. It began in the seventh with two outs when Cole Powers drew a four-pitch walk before Martin recorded his third knock of the day to move Powers to second. Following a pitching change, Collin Clarkson was hit by a 1-2 pitch that loaded the bases for Hassan -- who recorded five crucial outs late in the game on the mound -- as he delivered the game-tying base hit into right field. An errant throw into home allowed both Martin and Clarkson to score that gave the Eagles a 6-4 lead.

Sean Smith followed with an RBI double that added to the lead, 7-4. And from there, the Eagles needed just nine more outs. They got that and more as they plated two runs in the eighth on a Martin RBI single, then he drew an errant pick-off throw with runners on first and third that allowed William Tuttle to score as the lead sweltered to 9-5.

In the bottom of the eighth, Hassan surrendered a solo home run before finishing the inning and getting the first out of the ninth inning. After allowing two runners to reach in the ninth, Noah Ezzie was called on to get the final two outs and he delivered as he recorded two strikeouts to pick up his second save of the season.

For the Eagles, it's their second Top-10 victory in the last two seasons after knocking off then-No. 9 Salisbury in the final game of the regular season last May.

Mary Washington is back in action on Saturday as it'll host Muskingum for a doubleheader at 11 a.m.
