The University of Mary Washington baseball team took down Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday afternoon, 5-2, in Fredericksburg, Va.
With the bases-loaded in the third,
Oliver Martin ripped a ground ball to short that was mishandled by the Marlins' shortstop, which allowed for the first run of the day to cross the plate. Then
Eric Powell was hit by a pitch to bring another run home. A hitter later,
Gavin Cunningham was also hit by a pitch to bring the third run of the inning home to push the lead to 3-0.
The Marlins got on the board in the fourth after a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch with no outs, but
Noah Ezzie was able to escape the jam and limit the damage, 3-1. In the bottom of the fourth,
Cole Powers grounded a ball to shortstop, which was deep enough to score
Connor Hassan from third after he was hit-by-a-pitch and then stole two bases.
In the fifth, an RBI single brought Virginia Wesleyan to within a pair of runs, 4-2. But a double steal of Hassan taking second and
William Tuttle stealing home brought an insurance run in to run the lead to 5-2.
Noah Ezzie was solid in his second career start after working around five hits, four walks, and two runs (one earned) in his five innings -- he also struck out three.
Jake Herbst pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh, while
Nick Jordan recorded his first career save after tossing the final two innings.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday against No. 7 Salisbury. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
