The University of Mary Washington baseball team split a Friday doubleheader with Nichols in Myrtle Beach, S.C., falling in Game 1 before
Noah Ezzie tossed five innings of one-run ball in Game 2.
Game 1 - Eagles fall, 9-5.
In Game 1 the Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to
Collin Clarkson's RBI single and
Eric Powell's sac fly. Nichols would get a run back in the second, 2-1, but that's where the score remained heading into the third.
In the fourth, though, things began to unravel as Nichols scored six runs to take an 7-2 lead, but the Eagles struck back for a pair of runs in the top of the fifth as
Benjamin Rossi laced an RBI single into left field and
Cole Powers add an RBI knock as well to pull within three, 7-4. In the bottom of the inning, Nichols added a run, but UMW scored another in the top of the sixth, 8-5. In the bottom half the Eagles yielded another run as they were put away in the top half of the inning.
Game 2 - Eagles win, 3-1.
In Game 2, UMW got exactly what it needed on the bump as Ezzie tossed five innings of two-hit baseball. He yielded just one run and struck out five in his first career start, throwing 85 pitches in the process.
The offense backed him up enough to come away with the victory as the Eagles responded to Nichols 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Clarkson tripled to tie the game at one each. A batter later,
Connor Hassan put a ball in play that was misplayed by the shortstop, which allowed Hassan to reach and Clarkson to score, which gave UMW its first lead of the game, 2-1.
In the fifth,
William Tuttle added a crucial insurance run on a sac fly that scored
Ryan Henson to put the Eagles up, 3-1.
From there,
Jake Herbst tossed two scoreless innings to come away with his first career save and salvage the Eagles' 11th victory in their last 12 games.
UMW is back in action against Ithaca on Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
